Some exciting news: I’m writing another book! Starlight is Falling tells the story of astronomers’ quest to understand the Hubble constant: that linchpin number that tells us where our universe came from and where it’s going. Alongside the astronomical story, I’ll also trace the rapid evolution of how we pursue and support humanity’s biggest scientific questions.
My first popular science book, The Last Stargazers, also explored the human stories of astronomy, sharing the adventures and quirks of working as a professional astronomer. I’m writing Starlight is Falling to intertwine two threads of scientific storytelling that aren’t often told together. Questions of money and politics are too often politely left out of purely scientific tales. Conversely, our sense of scientific wonder is usually nudged aside as a luxury or curiosity when the time comes to discuss the practical nuts and bolts of how day-to-day research is done.
